October 17, 2011: $20 to see prisoners stage a show in Victoria
One of North America’s only inmate prison troupes is staging its 50th show this fall with a production of the English fantasy classic “Gormenghast”. The William Head on Stage (WHOS) is celebrating its 30th year and regularly performs for the public. Past productions include “Dracula” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. The stage adaptation by John Constable of Mervyn Peake’s trilogy about members of the House of Groan in the earldom of Gormenghast is a fitting choice, telling the story of a kingdom that’s almost a prison for the members of the family who live there. The cast features nine inmate actors and three local actresses. Gormenghast will run starting until November 12, 2011 and is held at the William Head Penitentiary, 40 minutes from downtown Victoria in Metchosin, B.C. Gates open to the public at 6 p.m. and close at 7:30 p.m., with the performance beginning shortly thereafter. WHOS is located inside a Federal Institution and only adults 19 years and older are permitted to attend the performances. Tickets are $20 and are available online at www.ticketrocket.org. For more information call 250-391-7078.
