CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO — My opportunity to visit this iconic property became a reality two weeks ago on a chilly snowy weekend.  Langdon Hall is more of a country estate than a hotel and it has the only 5-diamond CAA/AAA restaurant in Ontario.

Langdon Hall is renowned for its prestigious restaurant run by executive chef Jonathan Gushue and gorgeous historical setting.

The food here is unique, locally sourced,  savoury and indulgent. Gushue and his creative staff really know how to put on a dinner show. The dishes were artfully presented too — as you’ll see from the photographs that will accompany an upcoming Vacay.ca article on the property and restaurant.

Langdon Hall was a private residence up to 1980 and in 1989 opened as a hotel. I must admit I felt a bit intimidated approaching the looming pillared mansion on the hill as we drove up the long winding driveway.

Yet once inside, there is a feeling of graciousness and intimacy that welcomes a visitor and puts one at ease. A stay here evokes memories of another era but with all the comforts of today. The estate is surrounded by 200 acres of property which guests are encouraged to explore along well marked trails.

In the summer, Langdon Hall has beautiful gardens to meander through, tennis courts to get competitive on and a lovely outdoor pool to simply wile away in the afternoon sun.

Hopefully winter is moving on, but for that weekend I appreciated the surprise dusting of snow for the snug and cozy atmosphere it provided.  Staying overnight it felt as if I had escaped on a mini-vacation even though I was merely an hour from my home in downtown Toronto.

Langdon Hall welcomes visitors to stop in for a drink at the bar or for High Tea in the afternoon, offered at 2 pm and 4 pm.

As I alluded, Vacay.ca will be publishing an article in a few days with much more detail. Check back soon for Adrian Brijbassi’s in-depth article on chef Jonathan Gushue and his cuisine, and Carol Perehudoff’s video coverage of the Langdon Hall spa.
