Vacay.ca Sees Stars in Jasper
You will love vacationing in Jasper. During an interview with Vacay.ca at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, Bob McDonald of CBC’s “Quirks & Quarks” told us that this region was one of his favourites. Another journalist who enjoyed her visit to the park that is 370 kilometres west of Edmonton was Vacay.ca writer Karen Evenden, who covered the Jasper in January Festival in her article “Jasper takes the chill out of January.”
But the dark skies are another reason why you will fall in love with this place. Every year Jasper celebrates the Dark Skies Festival. Vacay.ca Deputy Editor Rod Charles had a chance to visit and enjoyed having his head in the clouds.
Charles: “Another amateur astronomer showed off Vega, a ‘relatively’ close star only 25 light years from Earth, and, together with Arcturus and Sirius, one of the most luminous stars in our Sun’s neighbourhood. Another amateur astronomer aimed his telescope directly at Neptune, ‘more than 30 times as far from the sun as Earth, the planet takes almost 165 Earth years to orbit our sun.’
“After carefully placing my eye as close to the eyepiece without touching the telescope, I peered through and it appeared like a faint dot in the sky. While Neptune has a mass that is 17.148 that of earth, the planet was too far away, and the microscope too small, to actually see the details of this giant blue gas planet.”
