TORONTO, ONTARIO — It’s a happening weekend in Toronto. NXNE has stellar musicians in town, the annual Luminato festival is lighting up venues with artistic showcases, and the 2013 MuchMusic Video Awards are ready to rock on Sunday night with a big outdoor show at Queen and John streets.
On Friday, I headed to one of the NXNE events held at the Drake Hotel, the hipster spot on Queen Street West. After the Manitoba Music party, I caught an interesting composition right outside of the Drake. I started to head east, back toward downtown, when I spotted this gentleman hanging out at the foot of the hotel. Taken with a Nikon D7000 using a fixed 85mm lens, and shot at f8 at 60th second, the photo exemplifies the cool cred of this neighbourhood and the casualness of the image makes it clear that summer has finally arrived in the city.
In this part of town, warm weather is a catalyst for activity. Cafes and boutiques fill up, art galleries invite you in, and the bars and clubs are alive with people geared up for a great summer party. The people-watching opportunities are tremendous.
This weekend, more so than any other this year, Toronto is bursting with the spirit of summer. Just walking down the sidewalk gives you a glimpse of the golden hour when a weekend afternoon can charge into a long, splendid, and boisterous night full of revelry and the joys of being in a place where your thoughts are far, far away from work.
